Army launches tree-planting project

The army, in collaboration with the Sirasa Media Network, launched a mega tree-planting project yesterday in Maruthankerny, Jaffna, a press release issued by the army said.

It is being carried out under the army’s Thuruliya Wenuwen Api project, in collaboration with Sirasa’s Thuru Sirasa project; and, furthermore, 2,000 saplings are to be planted under the project, the press release stated.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva was the chief guest at the event, at which Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya, Sirasa Electronic Media (Business) Director Nedra Weerasinghe, and Sirasa Public Relations Director Priyantha Wijesinghe were also present. A similar project was also carried out by the army in Saliyapura, Anuradhapura. A thousand saplings were planted under that project.

The tree species that were planted yesterday included margosa, mango, cashew, almond, and tamarind.
