Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting inaugurated

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the 2019 Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting held in Colombo yesterday evening. Law Ministrs and Attorney Generals across the Commonwealth are meeting triennially to share common legal traditions and experiences.

This year meeting covers a wide range of topics including the rule of law, vulnerable persons in the justice system, authentication and admissibility of electronic evidence, judicial appointments, National coordination and international cooperation in criminal matters, developments in data protection law, issue in the reform of civil procedure law and mobile courts etc.

The member countries will receive an opportunity to discuss the topics selected and the main theme is “Equal access to justice and Rule of Law’.

The participants will also consider a proposed Commonwealth pro bono placement and mentoring programme at this conference. This key technical assistance aims to build capacity in member countries by offering tailormade support in diverse areas on the rule of law and governance, delivered by hands on pro bono experts of member countries.
