GMOA threatens strike if MCC agreement comes into force

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) will launch an islandwide strike without further notice, along with other trade unions, if the government signs the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement secretly without granting the demands of the GMOA related to it, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Addressing a press conference at the GMOA headquarters in Colombo yesterday, he said the GMOA will take legal action against the signing of the MCC agreement and plans to seek an injunction.

According to Dr. Aluthge, all Presidential candidates should reveal their permanent stand on the MCC agreement and all its provisions should be revealed to the public in full without hiding anything. The authorities should give an assurance to the public about refraining from taking any action in connection with the MCC agreement until the Presidential Election ends.

The GMOA will inform the relevant authorities that no agreement such as MCC agreement can be signed without getting the approval of the people through a referendum. This should be turned into law through an Act of Parliament, Dr. Aluthge said.
