Influenza B suspected in undergraduate’s death

Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige said it is suspected that Influenza B caused the death of the undergraduate at Rajarata University, but the relevant investigations are still in progress.

According to Dr. Ginige, influenza is not a new or serious disease. It is usually prevalent at this time of the year and there is no need to panic.

The current type of influenza could be Type B. Relevant medical investigations are now being performed. There is no other viral fever or any type of unknown infection in the country at present. Only in rare instances do patients develop complications due to influenza.

Meanwhile, university sources said that four faculties of the Rajarata University were closed indefinitely due to the viral fever that has spread among students. Faculties of the Applied Sciences, Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Technology located in Mihintale were closed.

Another student who was seriously ill with fever also died after being admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
