A stock of foreign cigarettes valued at Rs. 65 million illegally imported under the guise of electrical accessories, intercepted by Airport Customs officials, was destroyed at the Ceylon Tobacco Company destruction yard under the supervision of Customs officials yesterday.

Customs officials said the cigarettes stocked in 26 boxes were neatly covered with electrical accessories and T-shirts to avoid detection. The contraband cigarettes had been loaded into the vessel Xiamen which sailed from the UAE port Jebel Ali.

If the cigarettes went undetected, the loss of tax income to the government would have been Rs. 62 million, Customs officials said.

The contraband had been consigned to a fictitious company bearing a Colombo address.
