Once bitten still not shy, Shakib?

When the disgraced duo of Steven Smith and David Warner, boldly committed “ball-tampering” and blatantly cold-shouldered the repercussions for dispiriting the game, the news flashed spared no nook or corner. The lesson and the warning it gave out is “don’t dare to do”. Nevertheless committing a gross sporting offense, it has only turned out to be “once bitten, still not shy” in the latest victim, Shakib’s case.

The two are already rectifying and compensating for their absence by winning against Sri Lanka without sweating. While this is underway, astonishingly and effortlessly Bangladesh’s most-adored player has joined the wrong club of “failing to disclose approach on match-fixing”. His name, fame, fortune and career have taken a nosedive.

Shakib is no ordinary player, and this is no ordinary dent either. It has already begun to take the toll personally and professionally. For Bangladesh, the beating would be for the country and cricket. With a tour against the Indians on the horizon, the Bengali tigers may feel the brunt.

A brunt, on-and-off the field. For a highly reputed athlete, Shakib is, it raises the simple question as to why he failed to notify to his cricket board. It should be noted, his teammate and top-order batsman, Tamim Iqbal, too receive the same approach, but the latter though had nipped it in the bud surviving a great scare.

Bangladesh, however, has been no stranger to its players getting caught red-handed for cricketing corruption. Former skipper Mohammad Ashraful had to pay the price of distancing him from the game for five-years for “engaging” in spot-fixing, in a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) game.

His team mate though, the latest victim, despite not committing the extreme have each other for company.

All eyes will be on the Shakib-less Bangladesh, as to how they are going to take it in the stride and maintain, at least a decent show. It remains to be seen, Shakib-minus Bangladesh’s performance. His team with his leadership and contribution from minnows emerged to a major Asian side.

With the leader fainted and fallen to darkness, it does present an opportunity for others to rise to the occasion and keep cricket ticking.
