Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Meeting commences today

The Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Meeting will be taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from today to November 8 on the theme ‘Equal access to justice and the rule of law’.

The Commonwealth Union Secretary General Patricia Scotland arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday to attend the Commonwealth Ministers' Conference.

In a statement, She said access to justice for all was not yet a reality but there were ways forward. She said studies indicate that of the 1.4 billion people who for whatever reason in the past two years felt the need for recourse to law, less than half have had their justice needs met.

She further said that , Law Ministers and Attorneys-General from 53 countries will gather to discuss how to tackle barriers to access to justice, such as costs and poverty, distrust of the justice system, and corruption
