EC requests employers to grant employees leave for voting

The Election Commission said that the public and private sector employers should grant special paid leave to their employees to cast their vote.

Issuing a media communiqué, the commission requested to grant the employees at least two days leave if the distance from the service station to the polling station is over 150km and grant at least one and half days leave if the distance from the service station to the polling station ranges between 100km-150km.

The employees who have a distance between 40km to 100km to the polling station from their service station are entitled to one day special leave and others whose service station is located less than 40km to the polling station are entitled to a half day leave.

“What is recommended is the minimum leave to be granted. There is considerable number of cases where three days are required to go to the polling station and returned to the work station in certain parts of the island.

In such cases, it should be noted to grant three days leave as appropriate,” the Election Commission said in its statement.

“Moreover, it should be highly commended if the employees volunteer to avail leave for a less duration than what is stipulated above to vote. The employees should make a written application to avail leave and all employers should prepare a register indicating the employees applied for special leave and the duration of leave so granted to be displayed at the work station.

All employers are hereby requested to grant adequate leave for the employees to vote in compliance with the recommendations,” it added.
