AG instructs police to record Sri Ranga’s statements

Attorney General Dappula de Livera PC has directed the Acting IGP to record statements from former Parliamentarian J.Sri Ranga and former DIG A.Senarathne in connection with a fatal road accident that occurred in Vavuniya in 2011.

On a previous occasion, the Attorney General had instructed Police to arrest and produce in court former Parliamentarian J.Sri Ranga and five others as suspects in connection with this incident.

However, they had been produced in court without their statements being recorded.

Coordinating Officer to the Attorney-General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told the news media that the Attorney General has given instructions to the Acting IGP to submit a report within three days including the extracts of statements given by two individuals including a former Parliamentarian.

Ms. Jayaratne further stated that the Attorney General has also instructed the Acting IGP to take necessary action against the Police officers who disregarded the Attorney General’s advice.

The Attorney General had instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit Director to arrest the former Parliamentarian on charges of causing the death of a person by a rash and negligent act and conspiracy to fabricate false evidence.

The Attorney General has further advised Police to arrest and produce five individuals including four Police officers Amarasiri Kumara Senaratne, Sugath Roshan Sanjeewa, Harischandra Bandara, Walpola Gamaralalage Padmapala and Ajith Priyadarshana Herath for conspiracy to fabricate false evidence and fabricating false evidence for switching drivers in the case.

The Attorney General observed that there is sufficient evidence to name these individuals as suspects and they can be charged for violating the provisions of Penal Code and Motor Traffic Act.
