United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue as the Prime Minister even after November 16 despite the election of a new president according to the Constitution of the country, Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara said. He was addressing a press briefing held at the main election office of the New Democratic Front (NDF) at Vauxhall Street, Colombo yesterday.

He said that either Sajith Premadasa or Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the winner, the constitutional has no provision to change the premiership as they wish without a simple majority in Parliament.

Nanayakkara said that several television channels which he called the ‘advertising firms of a particular political party’ were telecasting breaking news quoting a statement by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on Wednesday that he would continue in the premiership and said there is no bad impact on the election campaign of Premadasa through this statement.

He said State Minister Vasantha Senanayake has no ethical right to remain in the party membership further more since he has been expelled.

“We know the link Senanayake has with Gotabaya Rajapaska. It was strong enough to commit even a murder. Once we prevented such an attempt. We cannot reveal those things to the media,” the MP told the media.

He said the people now know who is responsible for the Easter Sunday attack. “We are doubtful whether this attack was launched to emphasize the people that the country needs a military leadership.”

Sajith Premadasa yesterday launched his election manifesto in Kandy giving the foremost place to Buddhism, while protecting the other religions.

“Sajith Premadasa is ready to go on a new political journey with a new political culture. There would be no politicians who are connected to corruption under his rule,” Nanayakkara further said.
