Sudden outage endangered Sajith’s life:

CID, CEB, NEC, city council should probe K’gala power outage - Attanayake

Former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake yesterday made a request from four institutions to conduct an immediate inquiry into the sudden power outage that occurred in the Kurunegala city area when the helicopter carrying NDF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa was about to land at Welagedara Stadium on Wednesday evening. Unable to land, Minister Premadasa was compelled to miss the rally in the city, the last of several he held on that day.

Addressing news media yesterday at the main NDF election office at Vauxhall Street, Colombo, Attanayake said he was making this request from the National Election Commission, Criminal Investigation Department (CID),

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Kurunegala Municipal Council. He claimed that this incident could have risked Premadasa’s life.

Attanayake stressed that “According to the Presidential Elections Act, each and every candidate should be given similar opportunities during the campaigning period. If it was not a power cut made on purpose, the responsible authorities could have taken optional and safety measures.”

“It is clear that this is totally a conspiracy. We wonder if those who did this aimed at harming the life of our candidate, Minister Premadasa,” he charged.

Minister Premadasa had arrived at Kurunegala by hired helicopter to participate in a rally that had been organized in support of him, after attending several other rallies held in Vavuniya and Dambulla. However, when the power outage suddenly occurred last evening, the chopper was forced to detour to Katunayake.
