Although promises made by most politicians and political parties are normally forgotten when they came into power one can confidently expect Sajith Premadasa to implement his pledges to the letter going by the experience of his past performance as a Parliamentarian and a Minister, the Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of the Malwatte Chapter observed yesterday.

He expressed these sentiments when NDF Presidential candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa called on him at his Aramaya in Kandy and presented his Presidential Election Manifesto to him.

The Mahanayake Thera said Sri Lanka would have been a heaven on earth today if promises given in election manifestos in the past had been fully implemented. The past experience had been that politicians often relegated their manifestos to the dustbin after coming to power.

Speaking on the occasion, NDF candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa said he had formulated a people oriented, people friendly and progressive policy statement after much thought.

“It aims to save national wealth, prevent the nurturing of politicians at the expense of people’s tax money and, instead, invest it in a process aimed at the welfare of the public,” he said.

“If I am elected President, I will consider myself as the servant of the people and as the country’s temporary trustee rather than its ruler,” Premadasa said.

He said policy formulation, implementation as well as observation and follow up action would be practised diligently under his tenure. He would also build a direct link between the Presidency and the people that would eliminate the distancing of the President from them. This would be done by establishing Presidential People Development Units at Divisional Secretariat level. This would enable people to contact the President directly without going through several intermediaries, he said.
