Sajith promises to ensure self-sufficiency in food

New Democratic Front (NDF) Presidential candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa said if elected to power, he will give all possible strength and support to local farmers and enable them to produce all food items needed by the people locally.

In addition, he will develop the agriculture sector by assisting farmers to export quality agricultural produce.

Sajith Premadasa gave this assurance when he addressed a Presidential Election propaganda meeting at Dambulla Nissanka Park recently.

Premadasa said his main opponent at the hustings had shown reluctance to take up his challenge to come forward for a debate on their Presidential Election manifestos.

He had even challenged his main opponent to bring along members of his family to help him out in the debate, but there has still not been a proper response to this request.

Premadasa said as for him he did not need any support because he was well equipped to face any debate single-handed.

He said his main objective would be to take all possible steps towards strengthening the entire farming community. In pursuance of this goal, steps would be taken to provide free fertilizer in respect of all agricultural crops. He would also prohibit the re-export of pepper.

He said measures to improve health, education, communication and other facilities spelt out in his manifesto would be implemented to the letter without restricting them to mere words. He had also formulated plans to increase the Samurdhi assistance and provide a higher economic status to Samurdhi beneficiaries.

Premadasa said he would also provide every family in this country a house of their own and open technological institutes in each DS division to provide job training and employment avenues to the youth. The tourism industry would also be developed under his administration.

His administration would also ensure the equitable distribution of wealth and other resources among the people, the NDF Presidential candidate said.

He said he would also prohibit the import of bulletproof vehicles for Ministers and Parliamentarians at state expense. He would lead the way by setting an example himself.

Sajith Premadasa said he would not appoint corrupt individuals to high posts in his government. He would give appointments with his signature to people with a clean slate only. He planned to offer the Defence and Law and Order portfolios to Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka because he was the most qualified and competent person to handle the subject.

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne said the people were fully aware that their freedom and independence were guaranteed only after this government assumed office. During the previous regime, Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga had to pay with his life because he had disclosed details of the corrupt MIG deal.

During the past regime, several journalists had to flee the country to save their lives. He said NDF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa would win the forthcoming election convincingly and no one would be able to prevent it.
