Sri Lanka’s first ‘Readathlon’ features some of the world’s bestselling books authored by leading personal development coaches and was recently concluded with great success. The Readthalon was organized by Pick a Book, an initiative of Epitom Digital which is a concept-driven digital marketing agency with a vision to promote reading habits amongst everyone.

Pick a Book Readathlon, as its name suggests, is a back-to-back marathon of reading and presentation to an audience of reading enthusiasts as well as non-readers. The Readathlon was held recently at the Hilton Colombo and featured bestselling books such as ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ by Tony Robins, ‘Men and From Mars and Women are from Venus’ by John Gray, ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter, ‘Who’s in Your Room’ by Ivan Misner, Rick Sapio, and Steward Emery, ‘Beyond the Power of Your Subconscious Mind’ by James Jensen, and ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne.

“Pick a Book started as a book club to encourage reading. Our ultimate objective was to encourage reading habits amongst everyone,” said RagulanTharmakulasingam, Director Epitom Digital and Founder of Pick a Book.

Pick a Book sessions are unique in that the books are introduced by a team of avid readers and practitioners of the principles of the books. Having them share their experiences in relation to the publication’s themes and principles make the books more relatable to the audience. At the inaugural Readathlon, the featured books were presented by RagulanThamakulasingam, Glenn Lord, ShuvoHridayesh, Lien Keerthisinghe, YaswanthNagarajah and SehanduDamsath.

Interested attendees can drop in at The Office at Colombo 7 every Thursday evening for the public Pick a Book sessions or once a month for the Pick a Book Junior sessions. Visitors could also purchase the presented book after the event.

Within just three months of launching the first Pick a Book session, the reading enthusiasm has picked up immensely with a team of over 30 book presenters. Epitom has already held several public Pick a Book sessions, as well as Pick a Book Junior sessions and the latest addition is the recently concluded Readathlon.

The PAB initiative has not only helped book aficionados to read more but it has encouraged non readers to take an interest in reading.

Epitom is keen to expand its efforts further to get more people into the habit of reading even amongst corporate executives.

“We conduct Pick a Book sessions at companies and we are well on our way to setting up Pick a Book Clubs to ensure that reading doesn’t end with the sessions. We engage the employees to keep reading by getting them involved in multiple Pick a Book presentations and events. Our goal is to expand this to reach as many companies as possible so that reading becomes an essential part of training for staff,” Ragulan said.

Within a short time, Pick a Book has caught the interest of many leading companies in Sri Lanka who have set up Pick a Book Clubs within their organizations to encourage reading, self training and development. These sessions have helped develop reading, presentation and public speaking skills of many corporate Pick a Book Club members.

Pick a Book recently expanded to host kids reading sessions to encourage young readers to share some of their own creative work. The first of these were also held recently with youngsters presenting their favorite fictions.

“Reading is an important habit to encourage from a young age. Writing helps kids to expand their imagination, reading and writing habits as well as to appreciate other literary works,” Ragulan said.

Pick a Book is planning to expand into universities, schools and to integrate Pick a Book Clubs in companies as a way of achieving their ultimate goal – which is to encourage reading amongst everyone in Sri Lanka.
