Back-bencher MP Namal Rajapaksa has offered to substitute for his uncle and SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa to take up NDF candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa’s challenge for a live televised policy debate between candidates. Rajapaksa, eldest son of Opposition Leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, made this offer to ‘stand-in’ for candidate Gotabaya Rajapakasa in a debate while speaking at a Rajapaksa campaign rally in Dummalasuriya on Tuesday.
Rajapaksa told the rally that he was willing to take up the challenge of a one-on-one debate made by New Democratic Front (NDF) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.
Namal Rajapaksa said Sajith Premadasa was challenging Gotabaya Rajapaksa to a debate at each of his election rallies. He said Premadasa had mentioned his name too saying that if Gotabaya was unwilling to agree to a face-to-face debate, he could bring along all members of the Rajapaksa family.
Rajapaksa declared that before taking on Gotabaya Rajapaksa, he wanted Premadasa to come for a one-on-one debate with him. He argued that UNP Deputy Leader Premadasa was “not a good debater” because he had not debated with him (Namal Rajapaksa) in all these years in Parliament.
