Military, Police personnel barred from engaging in political activities

The Ministry of Defence has issued instructions to all Military and Police personnel not to engage in political activities during the forthcoming Presidential Election.

“Accordingly, any active Military and Police personnel are not allowed to engage in any political activities apart from casting their vote at the election,” the Ministry emphasized.

Further, all retired military or Police personnel are also advised to refrain from engaging in political campaigns while in uniform.

According to the media release issued by the Defence Ministry, active officers can be legally charged for allowing the use of their photographs or statements for election campaign purposes.

The Ministry has stressed that the Army, Air Force, Navy and Police personnel must be impartial in their behaviour in order to ensure that the forthcoming Presidential elections are free and fair. (8)

All issues faced by CDF personnel will be solved-Gota Dhanushka Godakumbura, Digamadulla Rowing Corr, Ampara Group Corr, Digamadulla Group Corr and Damana Special Corr

All issues faced by the Civil Defence Force (CDF) personnel will be solved when elected to power, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa pledged.

He was addressing a public rally at Ampara Weerasinghe Grounds on Tuesday.

The former Defence Secretary said that he took the initiative to set up the Civil Defence Force and provided all facilities to it. He added that his attention has been drawn to the salary anomalies of Civil Defence Force personnel.

Rajapaksa pointed out that terrorism had raised its ugly head again as the defence plan prepared after the defeat of terrorism in 2009 had been weakened by the incumbent Government. He said that national security could be guaranteed only by a Government led by him.

Observing that his election manifesto clearly outlines his policies on the education, health and agriculture sectors, Rajapaksa said that he is ready to execute his duties if the people give him a mandate.

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and several SLPP MPs addressed the gathering.
