From eagerly awaited sequels to new books by your favourite authors to celebrity debuts and other mystery finds, there are a variety of books which you might want to add to your reading list. Bookworms in Sri Lanka can easily access these books at an affordable price if they visit the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale which is unfolding at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) till October 28.

Ever since it was introduced in 2017 the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has become a much awaited event in the local events calendar. Running for the third successful run in a row in 2019, Big Bad Wolf Books sale has much more to offer to its fans today.

The exclusive preview sale of the event took place on October 17. Although the event was only suppose to open for the public the following day, there was still an impressive turnout of bookworms who had managed to get their hands on preview passes, eager to be among the first to grab the opportunity to get their hands on some bargains.

Open on weekdays from 10 am to 10 pm and operating for 24 hours during the weekend, the Big Bad Wolf Books sale has included some new technological additions to its latest chapter. Magical Book titles, which are Augmented Reality (AR) inspired books for children have been introduced to the event.

This range of books includes preschool learning series as well as bedtime stories which are equipped with cutting-edge technology that opens the young readers to the joys of singing, learning and reading. Such books include favourites like ‘The Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Lets Learn Alphabet ABC’ among the 13 titles which have been included in this year’s book sale. These books are especially aimed at creating a reading culture among young children from age one to five as they will be able to interact and become engrossed in the pages of the publications.

Dubbed the world’s biggest book sale, the Big Bad Wolf Book sale 2019 will display over 1.5 million brand new English books covering a variety of genres from children’s books to fiction, literature, none fiction, and coffee table books at 50 percent to 90 percent off recommended retail price.

Speaking at the inauguration of the event Big Bad Wolf Books Founder Jacqueline Ng said that the sale comes as an ideal platform for people to read books and gain knowledge through the process.

“It is a change to make books affordable again. We have had a lot of positive feedback from our customers and that is what keeps us going each year. Throughout the years we have reached out to many more people including none-readers.

It has always been our mission to spread the love of reading, improve English literacy and changing the world, one book at a time. It only takes one right book to convert a none-reader to take to reading. We have come to realize that Sri Lankans value the power of knowledge and self education. We have seen many young readers who have bought their first English book at the Big Bad Wolf Book sale and have developed themselves to become well-read individuals. We invite everyone to join us this year, especially those who missed out on attending the sale from the past two years,” she said adding that they have expanded to 10 countries and have reached out to 33cities this year.

ProRead Lanka (Pvt ) Ltd Director and Big Bad Wolf Sri Lanka Partner Nishan Wasalathanthri noted that the team has emphasized on its CSR programme this year as well.

“We gave free books to students who had top grades in their Advanced Level examination last year and will be doing the same for scholarship students. We have joined hands with the Center of Hope, a charity organization which operates a care home and educational centers in Ampara, Batticaloa, Colombo and Mullaitivu. The Big Bad Wolf Book sale will pledge 500 books for this initiative. Visitors too are welcome to purchase and donate books for this worthy cause at the book sale,” he expressed.

Another addition to this year’s event is a free shuttle service which will be provided to SLECC from Bambalapitiya bus halt (in front of Vishaka College) and Borella bus halt (next to BOC) during the weekend from 8 am to 8 pm. This is powered by YouCab.

Endorsed by the Education Ministry in Sri Lanka this year’s partners for the sale include Sampath Bank, Mobitel and YouCab.
