Select Committee on Easter Sunday attacks

Final report in Parliament tomorrow

The Select Committee to look into and report to Parliament on the terrorists attacks that took place in different places in Sri Lanka on April 21 will submit its report with recommendations and preventive measures to avoid such terror attacks, tomorrow (23) to Parliament, Deputy Speaker and Chair to the Committee Anada Kumarasiri said.

The Deputy Speaker said the preparation of the 200-page report was nearing completion.

The Committee Chair highlighted that some newspapers have erroneously stated that the report will make charges against some politicians and officials. “The Select Committee was appointed to look into where things have gone wrong and what should be done to avert attacks as such in the future” the Deputy Speaker said.

“Parliament cannot decide on who should be accused or responsible for those attacks. That power is vested with the Judiciary. The role of the Select Committee was simply to look into where the shortcomings were,” he said.

The creation of such a hostile situation within the Eastern Province, the failure of reporting such vital information accordingly, the lack of coordination among the police and security forces, and negligence in conducting a proper evaluation of the information received from intelligence services were areas which were looked into throughout the scope of the investigation.
