National People’s Power movement candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the country needs a government that can protect the environment.
“IF we are to protect the environment, there should be a plan to utilize lands in a proper manner. This will promote the process of regulating the use of land,” he said.
He said that the government in power has a responsibility to ensure a clean environment and food for the people.
Dissanayake was addressing an event held at Udawalawa to launch his environmental policy on Thursday evening.
“The countries administrators have left us a country where environment pollution is high after 71 year of their rule. The people are facing natural disasters such as floods and prolonged drought regularly,” he said.
Dissanayake added that people in some parts of the country were suffering from a scarcity of water. “Over 2000 persons died of kidney ailments in 2014 and 1,901 in 2018 respectively,” he said.
Dissanayake said selling water to households in Anuradhapura was a thriving business. “Forest density in the country is dwindling and government records show that 340 elephants have been killed for the past 34 months,” he said.
