Five-time national bantam weight champion Sajeewani Cooray of Air Force will be creating history as boxing champions from Sri Lanka’s Defence Services compete in the 7th Military World Games which will be held in Wuhan, the capital city of central China’s Hubei province from October 18 to 27.

A multi-sports event organized every four years since 1995, it has attracted 4,399 athletes, coaches and team officials from 87 International Military Sports Council (CISM) member nations.

Woman’s boxing has been introduced for the first time at the Games which is the second-biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics.

“I am determined to bring glory to Sri Lanka,” said Cooray, 29, a tough as nail fighter who lost to the world number three from India in the Feather weight (57kg) at the Thailand Open Boxing Tournament in July. The four-member Sri Lanka boxing team comprises Sanjeewa Bandara Rajakaruna and Jeewantha Vimukthi Kumara from Army and D.L.P.R. Kumara from Navy who will be competing for the second time at the Games. Cdr. M.A.L. Perera is manager of the team while B.G.L. Kumara (Army) and P.K. Amaratunga (Navy) will accompany the team as coaches.
