The residents in Laggala, the First Green City in the country, lament that a serious environmental hazard has been caused as the garbage in the town is being dumped into a big pit on a highland in the area.

The people complain that though residents give garbage separately as biodegradable, non-biodegradable, glass and plastic to Laggala Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) labourers, they dump garbage together into the massive pit filled with water on the highland owned by the Mahaweli Authority.

Hence, the people in the area face inconveniences due to bad odour, mosquitoes, houseflies and other insects.

Queried by the media, Laggala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Buddhika Senaratne said that PS employees collect garbage separately as biodegradable and non-biodegradable.

He refuted that the garbage is dumped haphazardly. He added that garbage could be transported to a waste-recycling plant in Dambulla, if vehicles for the purpose are received by the Pradeshiya Sabha.
