Aruwakkalu facility to receive CMC garbage as usual - Colombo Mayor

Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake yesterday said that the Aruwakkalu solid waste management facility will receive garbage collected from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) as usual.

Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara recently told the media that they had received a fax from the Secretary to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development stating that the Aruwakkalu facility will not receive the CMC’s garbage disposals.

Colombo Mayor Senanayake assured that the CMC’s garbage will be collected and transported as usual to the Aruwakkalu waste management facility. She said that a discussion was held regarding the matter with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

When Colombo Deputy Mayor M.T.M. Ikbal was asked about the issue, he assured that the Colombo Mayor has received permission to transport garbage collected from the CMC to the Aruwakkalu facility. However, Ikbal pointed out that they will not transport garbage to Aruwakkalu after March 2020, when the solid waste power plant is established. Solid waste would also be used to generate electricity.
