Caning leaves student bruised, afraid

Hatton Police have launched investigations into an incident where a male teacher attached to a school in the Hatton Education Division is alleged to have severely beaten a Grade 3 student, causing bruises and eight wounds on his body.

The student is now receiving treatment at the Dickoya Base Hospital. His mother R. Malar said the teacher had beaten her son with a stick and the child is reluctant to go back to school again.

A female teacher attached to the school’s Sinhala medium section said the student in question had allegedly stolen colour pencils belonging to another student on several occasions and had been severely warned not to repeat it. Finally, another teacher had given him several lashes with a cane with the intention of correcting him.
