The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) joined hands with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to ensure the victory of SLPP Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa and offer the mantle of president to him on a tray of flowers, Nuwara Eliya SLFP Organiser Roshan Gunawardene said. He was addressing a media briefing in Nuwara Eliya recently.
He said he will warn a select few in the party who are acting against their stand to desist from such action which would lead them to take a more drastic action.
Gunawardena said President Maithripala Sirisena had made the right decision by coalescing with the SLPP for the presidential election campaign.
He, however, said certain SLPP supporters were trying to put them into inconvenience by hooting and making cat calls when they came on the SLPP stage. “This had made certain SLFP supporeters to question as to why they had joined the SLPP stage if they were unwanted. This had made certain SLFPers to ask them why they had jined the SLPP if they are not wanted,” he said.
“If SLFPers were put into inconvenience in this manner at the instance of some middle level members of the SLPP, they would be unwillingly forced to take some drastic action which would be harmful to the SLPP candidate,” he said. “Therefore, all leaders should consider this matter seriously and take immediate action to stop this trend of belittling SLFP supporters,” he said.
He said the SLPP candidate would muster 70 per cent of the total votes cst if the SLFP joines hands with the SLPP.
