The government of Italy will provide technical assistance as well as investment opportunities to generate electricity using solid waste which has become a major problem for Sri Lanka, the Italian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Rita G. Mannella said yesterday.
The Ambassador was speaking at an official discussion held with the Minister of Power and Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayake at the Ministry recently.
The Italian Ambassador said that Sri Lanka should prepare itself in advance to face the difficulty of meeting the rapidly growing demand for electricity in the future. Using solid waste to generate electricity would be an excellent solution.
The Ambassador agreed to extend the fullest cooperation of her government to Sri Lanka for this project in the future.
The discussion between the Minister and the Ambassador focused on the possibility of introducing a power plant capable of processing between 100 and 300 tons of solid waste for power generation.
Following the discussion, Minister Karunanayake extended his gratitude to the Italian Ambassador for encouraging Sri Lanka on such a cost-effective and environmentally friendly power generation system to meet the future demand of electricity.
He also said that he is hopeful of the full support of the Italian government to launch the project in Sri Lanka.
The Minister said the project will reinforce the long-standing Italy – Sri Lanka friendship and bilateral cooperation.
