Ninety mini-labs to test local spices

Export Agriculture Department has initiated 90 mini labs across the country to test the quality of the locally manufactured spices.

Export Agriculture Department Director (Development) Janaka Liyandara said that these mini-labs have been set up at the areas, where the spice cultivation is high. He also pointed out that the mini-labs were set up to increase the demand for the local spices at the world market and to increase its price at the world market by branding and grading the local spice.

He said further that though the country produce high quality spices, the demand for them and the prices have come down due to non grading and non branding.

However, the small scale farmers are unable to pay to get their products tested from the private sector labs since it is very costly. Director Liyandara said that the farmers have the facility to get their products checked at these mini-labs at considerably low prices.
