Habarana Village by Cinnamon launches tree-planting initiative

As part of its effort to ‘Go Green’ and reduce its carbon footprint, Habarana Village by Cinnamon recently launched a tree-planting initiative that will help to reforest key woodland areas in the Cultural Triangle. The hotel will work with several partner hotels, temples, as well as the local Army and Air Force camps and other organizations in its vicinity, to plant a total of 500 jack trees by the end of 2019. This environmental project is part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ long-term sustainability strategy that strives to ensure operational excellence without taxing the planet.

Habarana Village by Cinnamon is a key property in the Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts portfolio and is situated in the heart of a forested, woodland zone that supports a rich variety of flora and fauna. Recognizing the growing need to preserve these areas and the habitats that they support, whilst also using tree-planting as a means of reducing the hotel’s carbon footprint, the hotel team hopes to work with its key partners and collectively facilitate this large-scale initiative with the collaboration and support of its private and public sector partners.

Commenting on the initiative Habarana Village by Cinnamon General Manager Marlon Robert said.

“As a company, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint on the planet and this campaign is one of the many steps that we will take in order to build a greener tomorrow as a team and organization. Each of these seedlings will be distributed to responsible partners, who will then ensure that they are taken care of and will grow and flourish. We are pleased to come together as a team to spearhead this reforestation drive, whilst promoting environmental consciousness within our organization and amongst other industry partners as well. We hope that we can work together to keep one of Sri Lanka’s key forest and woodland areas thriving for many years to come, whilst also minimizing our impact on our planet.”

Overtime each tree will not only reforest key areas in the Cultural Triangle, but will also help to remove harmful carbon dioxide gases from the atmosphere (which play a key role in global warming) and replace these with oxygen. Tree planting is increasingly becoming a primary way for organizations to fight climate change and offset the carbon dioxide emissions that they generate through their operations.
