‘Crisis-free postal service by next year’

Employee and administrative problems in the Postal Department will be resolved within the next year under a UNP Government, assured Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister M. H. Abdul Haleem. The Minister was speaking at a ceremony to mark the 50th World Post Day held at the Postal Headquarters, Colombo yesterday.

He said even though the postal service is a non-profit public service, he has been able to make it a profitable venture and added that he would further modernise the postal sector through the acquisition of technical expertise available internationally.

The official postal emblem and the postal song written by Bandara Ekanayake were also launched with small alterations on this day to mark the occasion. The Minister also presented certificates and medals to the winners of a student artwork competition to mark World Postal Day, jointly organised by Lake House publication, Mihira and the Postal Department.

Concurrent to yesterday’s ceremony, special post boxes designed to mark World Postal Day were installed in the Devinuwara, Point Pedro, Nalanda Gedige and Sangaman Kanda areas, the tourist hotspots in the country.

K. K. V. Chandrani, Sri Lanka’s one-and-only postwoman attached to the Payagala Post Office was presented a new bicycle and an insurance policy valued at Rs. 200,000. Minister Hakeem said even though Post Day ceremonies were held in outstations in past years, they were compelled to restrict it to Colombo this year on account of the impending Presidential election.
