Ibbagamuwa cemeteries overrun with weeds

Residents urge authorities to take immediate action

Ibbagamuwa residents have urged the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman to clean the public cemeteries in the area as they have been overrun with weeds. There are 121 cemeteries under the Ibbagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha’s jurisdiction. The residents have told the Daily News that the thickets that have grown in the cemeteries were too dense, and that several people have encroached some of those lands as well.

“Although we regularly pay our taxes, the pradeshiya sabha has not addressed many of our issues,” they added.

When the Daily News contacted Ibbagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman U.K. Sumith Udukumbura, he said that the sabha does not have sufficient funds and workers to clean the cemeteries regularly. He added that however, he would inform the Provincial Commissioner of the Local Government Department about the matter.
