The Navy apprehended 23 persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets, in the Sinanweli and Waleithotam sea areas on Saturday, a spokesman for the Navy said.

The suspects are residents of Kinniya and Mohottuwaram. Four banned nets, four dinghies and four outboard motors were also taken into Naval custody and handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Trincomalee, for further action.

Since fishing by banned nets harm the marine species, the Sri Lanka Navy is vigilant to avert such activities to protect the country’s fish and maritime resources, the spokesman added.
