Met. Dept. sounds lightning warning during thundershowers

The Meteorology Department yesterday issued a warning for thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in several areas.

The Meteorology Department said thundershowers accompanied by lightening are likely to occur in several places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Uva Provinces and in the Mullaitivu and Vavuniya districts in the evening or night.

Temporary strong gusty winds up to 70–80 kmph are also possible during thundershowers.

The Meteorology Department advised people to seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

People should also avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms, avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats, be careful of fallen trees and power lines, the Department advised. The Department further said for emergency assistance, people should contact the local Disaster Management authorities.

Meanwhile, on general weather conditions, the Meteorology Department said showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the island after 2.00 pm. Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75mm is likely in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, Southern, Western and Uva Provinces. Light showers may occur in the coastal areas in the Western and Southern Provinces and in Puttalam district in the morning too.

Misty conditions can be expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North Central Provinces during the morning.

The public is requested to take adequate precaution to minimise damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
