Boxing great Jaroof passes away

Former Sri Lanka pugilist Mohammed Jaroof Raju, one of the finest products of St. Michael’s, Polwatte, who belonged to the golden era of boxing in the 1960s, has passed away.

A Stubbs Shield champion for seven years having lost only once in the finals to P. Ramachandran of Royal in 1959, Jaroof won the National title as a 17-year-old schoolboy in 1963. He also won the Clifford ‘Best Boxer’ trophy defeating Asian Games Boxer S.P. Jayasuriya and Commonwealth Games Boxer G.A.S. Gunasinghe.

Jaroof fought in the Asian championship held in Sri Lanka in 1967 and lost a close fight to double gold medallist and winner of the best boxer trophy, Chan of Korea.

Jaroof’s funeral will take place today at Jummah Masjid Burial Ground, Dehiwela leaving his residence No.10/1 First Lane, Ratmalana at 10 a.m.
