Chamal, Welgama among no-shows

UPFA/SLFP MP Kumara Welgama (as an Independent) and former Speaker and UPFA/SLFP MP Chamal Rajapakse (as from Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandhanaya), were the most notable among those who did not hand over their nomination papers to the National Elections Commission yesterday despite placing deposits for this year’s Presidential Election.

Welgama had earlier announced that he would stand for election as a candidate who would “save the SLFP” from collapse due to Rajapaksa clan activities. Chamal Rajapaksa, brother of SLPP candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, placed his candidacy deposit late last week amid speculation that he would be a replacement for the Rajapaksa clan bid for the presidency if brother Gotabhaya’s citizenship issue prevented his participation.

The National Elections Commission accepted nominations from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. yesterday at the Election Commission Secretariat situated at Rajagiriya.

Forty-one candidates had placed deposits for the election by the Sunday (6th) afternoon deadline but, only 35 handed over their nominations and registered as candidates yesterday.

The other candidates who did not submit their nominations include Basheer Segudaud (Independent), Jayantha Liyanage (from Sinhaladeepa National Front), Gunapala Tissakuttiarachchi (Independent) and former minister G.A. Maheepala Herath (Independent).
