‘Gota unable to face the press’

Call for Sajith-Gota public debates

The UNP invites for an open policy debate between Democratic National Front (DNF) Presidential hopeful Sajith Premadasa and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) challenger Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Digital Infrastructure & Information Technology Non Cabinet Minister Ajith P. Perera said yesterday. He addressing a press briefing at a campaign coordinating office in Vauxhall Street, Colombo, yesterday.

“The March 12 movement led by PAFFEREL hosted a multi-party debate recently thereby strengthening democracy within Sri Lanka. However, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa failed to attend this debate proving his lack of ability to speak without a teleprompter.

We are ready to have three debates, without any mudslinging, but focusing on different subjects, presenting policies and solutions for burning problems within the country,” he said.

Perera pointed out that since Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was nominated as the SLPP Presidential candidate he has been incapable of addressing the media and to hold any press conference allowing media freedom.

“Gotabhaya lacks confidence in expressing his own ideas and to speak beyond the written paper given in to his hands. The public is intelligent enough to crown Sajith Premadasa, who is known as the ‘friend of poor’ (Duppathage Hithawatha), other than somebody who harbors foreign interests,” Minister Perera said.

Perera also said that his poor health condition, which is now put forward by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as an excuse for his inability to be active brings to light a point for citizens to consider before voting him.

“The citizens are searching for a leader who is strong and full of youthful spirit. We have brought forward the best option for that. Gotabhaya Rajapakse having to travel abroad suggests that his health condition is so severe that it cannot be treated locally. This could become a major issue in the future,” he argued.

“The maiden election campaign rally of UNF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadsa will be held on October 10 at Galle Face Green. We are fully confident that over 500,000 UNP supporters will join the rally. Sajith Premdasa equally addresses all religions and cultures and fair treatment is given to all. He is the leader who unites the entire nation. The seniors who earlier left the party have now extended their support unconditionally marking the re-awakening of the party with the emergence of Sajith Premadasa” the Minister said.

MP Hirunika Premachndra said that the unlimited media freedom and the fair enforcement of law experienced under the present government would only be a dream if the Rajapaksas come to power.

“During the Constitutional coup, the Rajapaksas were claiming that the Court was biased. Through the judgement last Friday, the accuracy and the independency of the court was proved. We are proud that within our period we crowned democracy,” she added.

Premachandra also highlighted the fact that the initial step of democracy which was brought out through the ‘Public Platform 2019’ was avoided by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa indicating the autocratic style of the Rajapaksa regime.

“Citizens must re-think before bringing a Rajapaksa to power again. SLPP supporters are slaving for the Rajapaksa family. They do not see any other leader apart from the Rajapaksa family,” she added.

When questioned by a journalist regarding the state of the the Prime Minister seat following the Presidential election, Minister Ajith P. Perera said: “A Presidential election cannot predict or determine the Prime Ministership although Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa done various manipulations. Even the Executive President has powers to dissolve Parliament only after four and half years,” he said.
