JVP to challenge Gota’s citizenship – Rajitha

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is planning to take legal action against Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s dual citizenship, Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne claimed yesterday.

He made this statement talking to journalists after the ‘Helaye Maha Sammuthiya’ event organized by the Colombo Business Association at the auditorium of the Defence Services School, Colombo.

“A lot of political parties and independent candidates will hand over nominations, but at the end the fight will be between the two main groups. Most people will vote for either of the two groups. That’s how it usually happens. Our election campaign will run smoothly.”

Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne added that legal action against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s dual citizenship is not over. “The JVP now says that they will take legal action against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s dual citizenship. Earlier Geetha Kumarasinghe lost her seat in parliament because of her dual citizenship,” he said.

The Minister added that the events that transpired in the last few days demonstrated again that the SLPP was a tool of the Rajapaksa family. “Chamal Rajapaksa also placed a deposit last week. So essentially, if the case against Gotabhaya went the other way, Chamal Rajapaksa would have contested. So its a case of one Rajapaksa replacing another.

The Prime Minister of a Gotabhaya Rajapaksa administration would be a member of the Rajapaksa family too. The Minister of Economic Affairs too will come from the Rajapaksa family. What will happen to other people in the party?” he asked.

Chamal Rajapaksa depositing money for the election also showed that even the Rajapaksa family was not sure about the citizenship of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. This is the first time where a presidential candidate had to seek the help of the court to determine his citizenship.

“No one was certain of Gotabhaya’s citizenship until last Friday. Why do they want to make such a man the President of Sri Lanka? Does the SLPP have no one else?”
