Suspects nabbed while transporting 50kg of Heroin

Police officers attached to Athurugiriya exit of the Southern Expressway today arrested two suspects while they were transporting 50 kilograms of heroin worth Rs 750 million in a luxury vehicle.

Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the suspects were arrested while they were traveling from the direction of Kaduwela after police officers decided to search the suspicious vehicle.

The police said that the suspects have been identified as the supporters of a drug racketeer whois currently in prison on charges of being connected to large-scale drug rackets.

The luxury vehicle is belonging to a resident of Borella and the arrested suspects have been identified as Pelwatta Gamage Chaminda Dilruk (38), from Borella and Mangala Sisira Kumarasiri (38), from Nugegoda.

Following a tip-off, Athurugriya police is also searching for another suspect in connection of this incident who has rented a house in Athurugiriya area.  

Around 50 kg of heroin packed into 50 parcels were found in two bags concealed inside the vehicle and scheduled to be distributed to Nugegoda, Athurugiriya, Kaduwela,Kottawa, Homagama and some other areas.    

Police Narcotic Bureau and Athurigiriya Police will conduct further investigations into this.
