Journalists share experiences with RTI at SLPI panel discussion

In commemoration of the UNESCO-declared International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) held a panel discussion recently themed ‘Right and Write to Info’, which focused on the Right to Information (RTI) and the use of RTI in journalism.

IDUAI is celebrated on September 28, and the SLPI held the panel discussion on October 1, at its auditorium.

The panelists comprised Tharindu Jayawardena, journalist, Raisa Wickrematunga, Senior Associate Editor, Himal Southasian, Sivalingam Sivakumaran, Assistant Editor, Sunday Virakesari, and freelance journalist Rahul Samantha.

The speakers shared their experiences with RTI in association with their careers in journalism.

Tharindu Jayawardena discussed the topic ‘Writing for Transparency and Accountability’, while Sivalingam Sivakumaran deliberated on ‘RTI’s Influence in Policies and Regulations in Public Authorities’, Rahul Samantha focused on ‘Empowerment of the Public for Democracy’ and Raisa Wickrematunga covered ‘Groundwork of RTI Policies and Regulations’ at the discussion.

Kamal Liyanaraachchi of the Press Complaints Commission (PCCSL), the moderator for the discussion, led the event allowing a trilingual engagement that opened up several avenues of discussion.
