Farm Machinery Management Course begins for young farmers at University of Jaffna

For the first time in Sri Lanka, 60 farmers have enrolled for a certificate course in Farmer Machinery Management with G.C.E (O.L) as the minimum qualification at the Faculty of Agriculture , University of Jaffna (UoJ), Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi which will commence on October 9, at 10 am .

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to be held under the patronage of Northern Province Governor Dr. Suren Raghavan , Competent Authority , UoJ Emeritus Prof. K.Kandasamy , Dean faculty of Agriculture Dr. K. Sooriyakumar, Former Dean and the architect of the Course Prof. T. Thushanthy Mikunthan , Director /CEO Kelani Cables PLc. Mahinda Saranapala, G.M Marketing Anil Munasinghe, A.G.M Marketing Devinda Lorenzohewa, Manager HR , Sameera Jayasekara, Sales Controller Ralph Roshan and Manager Project Rohana Wadduwage together with Jayantha Wijesinghe , the coordinator of the Kelani Saviya / Kelani Shakthi CSR projects. In 2017, course coordinator Wijesinghe had a discussion with, then dean faculty of agriculture Prof. T. Thushanthy Mikunthan to design an agriculture course to educate the farmer community in the Jaffna Peninsula in a similar passion of the Kelani Saviya and Kelani Shakthi programs which are in progress since 2007 as non formal education programs , through the National Universities of the country.

As a result of the discussion, Prof. T.Thushanthy Mikunthan designed the Farm Machinery Management Course for the farmer community which was approved by the Senate and the curriculum board of the university of Jaffna. The entire course will be free of charge.

Kelani Cables Plc and the Governor Northern Province sponsored the historic farmer education Program as a unique corporate social responsibility project for the first time in Sri Lanka.
