We want Gotabhaya to contest - Harin

‘UNP not linked to any court petitions’

“We really want Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to contest the election whatever the court cases filed against him. He is not a challenge for us at all,” Telecommunication, Foreign Employment and Sports Minister Harin Fernando said no one in the UNP s connected with the petition challenging SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s citizenship.

Addressing a media briefing held in UNresidential candidate Sajith Premadasa’s election office at Vauxhall Street yesterday, the Minister said the UNPs a progressive political party with a history of over 70 illustrious years in Sri Lankan politics has no need to place an obstacle in the way of any Presidential candidate.

Fernando said”We strengthened the inner democratic values before stabilising democracy in the country. Now we are on a victorious journey with the blessings of the Party leadership. SLPP politicians are trying to create instability in the country citing that there is no security.

They want to portray to the people that Gotabaya is the only person who can protect the people and the country.

“We would like to stress that there will be a major shift in the political landscape including several political crossovers during our maiden rally to be held in Wellawaya on October 13.

The petition was filed by activists Gamini Viyangoda and Prof.Chandraguptha Thenuwara he UNP ha no control over people who are not UNP members.

However, if UNPer filed the case, we would have told them to withdraw the case as Gotabaya is residential candidate who can be easily defeated by us,” he added.
