Road closures, check points for Nominations Monday

Special security measures and traffic plan will be in place on Monday in and around the Election Secretariat in Rajagiriya in view of the handing over of nominations for the ‘Presidential Election 2019’, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Speaking at the Media Centre at the Election Secretariat yesterday, he said over 1,200 police personnel would be deployed for search operations and security on Monday, and that the STF personnel and intelligence officers would also be deployed where necessary.

The Police Spokesman stressed that vehicle parades and walks would be strictly prohibited and that the display of cut-outs, banners and posters was also prohibited. Reminding that Police would be videographing illegal activity, SP Gunasekara said offenders would be dealt with under the law.

Pointing out that only authorized persons would be admitted in to the Election Secretariat premises on Monday, he said the entire premises would be thoroughly searched on Sunday to ensure security. He said search barriers would be set up at 10 locations.

He said a special traffic plan would be in place from 6am on Monday and that the road would be closed from Ayurveda Junction to Welikada junction for vehicles departing Colombo. He said the road would be closed for the heavy vehicles on this day, except for the public transport buses.

He requested the public to use alternative routes as much as possible to minimize traffic congestion on Monday in the vicinity of the Election Secretariat.
