Ragging has been eradicated from the Ruhuna University this year and those who had left the university because of the ragging will be given an opportunity again to pursue their higher studies in the university, Ruhunu University Chancellor Senior Professor Sujeewa Amarasena said.
He was addressing a press briefing at the university recently.
He said a video is going viral now in social media regarding a ragging at the university. “It was a past incident and it had occurred on March 13 and 14 at the canteen in an upper floor,” he said.
“Upon receiving a telephone call regarding this ragging, about 50 lecturers had visited the location where the ragging took place. Those who were bullying new students fled the place when they saw the lecturers. I thank those lecturers who visited the place and prevented the ragging. I have told this incident to the media thereafter,” he said.
He said he has informed that students who were subjected to ragging to complain against the culprits. “But so far, no complaint was lodged. I urged them to let me know what happened to them, and who assaulted them. I will take action against them,” he said. He accused the Frontline Socialist Party of ragging. “They resort to ragging for their existence. In the past, new students were asked to sing or act. But today they were molested and brutally attacked,” he said.
