Seventeen pay candidacy deposits up to Oct. 1

Elections Commission opens media centre :

As of October 1, seventeen candidates had paid their deposits to contest the forthcoming Presidential Election.

Among them are nine from registered political parties while the balance eight are independents who do not belong to any registered political party.

The last date for the payment of election deposits is Sunday, October 6, on which date deposits could be paid from 8.30 am to 12.00 midnight, Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.

He opened the Elections Commission Media Centre, jointly set up by the Commission and the Government Information Department, on October 1.

This function of the media centre is to create public awareness about matters related to the Presidential Election, due to be held on November 16, on a regular basis.

Deshapriya said nominations for the forthcoming Presidential Election will be accepted on October 7 from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. The time for making objections is from 9.00 am to 11.30 am the same day.

Thereafter, the Elections Commission will announce the nominations which have been accepted as well as the nominations that have been rejected, as quickly as possible.

Deshapriya said that even though the final date for the submission of postal voting applications was September 30, it was extended till 12.00 midnight on October 4 in consideration of the recent adverse weather conditions and the wave of strikes.

As such, all public servants, police and security forces personnel and staff attached to the SLTB, Sri Lanka Railways, Postal services and other security services are requested to hand over their postal voting applications to the respective returning officers, without waiting for the final day to post their applications.

They are also requested to hand over their applications to the nearest Elections Office, Deshapriya said.
