Ampara farmers begin Maha season work

Farmers in the Ampara District have commenced agricultural activities for the Maha season.

Officials from the Agricultural Department said that it has been planned to cultivate around 120,000 acres of paddy fields, and that farmers have been urged to complete their work by October 21.

This was mentioned at a recent meeting held under the patronage of Ampara District Government Agent D.M.L. Bandara, at the Ampara District Secretariat’s A.I. Wickrama Auditorium. Water for the irrigation schemes would be provided by from the Senanayake Reservoir.

However, as the water level in the reservoir was low, farmers have also been urged to make use of rainwater as well.
