Court allows Gota to go abroad for medical check

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, whose passport was impounded in connection with the D. A. Rajapaksa Museum case, was yesterday permitted to travel Singapore for a medical check-up by the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar.

The Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne allowed Gotabaya Rajapaksa to travel Singapore between October 9 and October 12.

The court ordered the registrar of the Permanent High Court-at-Bar to temporally release Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s passport following his request that he is required to present it when handing over nomination to contest the upcoming Presidential Election.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris with State Counsel Udara Karunatilleka, appearing for the Attorney General, informed court that the prosecution would not object to the request since it was made for medical purpose.

This case is to be commence for day-to-day trial from October 15 before the Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar.

On February 11, the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar decided to overrule preliminary objections raised by former Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and six others in connection with the D. A.Rajapaksa Museum case arguing that the Permanent High Court-at-Bar has jurisdiction to hear this case.

Indictments were filed against seven accused, namely, former Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, members of the director board of Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (LRDC) Chairman Prasad Harshan de Silva, Bhadra Udulawathi Kamaladasa, Sudammika Keminda Artigala, Saman Kumara Abraham Galappatti, Devage Mahinda Saliya and Srimathi Mallika Kumari Senadheera under seven counts for allegedly misappropriating LRDC funds of Rs.33.9 million.

President’s Counsel Ali Sabry appeared for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris and State Counsel Udara Karunathilake appeared for the Attorney General.
