SOS Monaragala Vocational Training Centre bags accolades

SOS Children’s Villages Monaragala Vocational Training Centre was awarded with two prestigious accolades at the ‘World Youth Skills Day 2019’ for ‘Best Island-wide Private Sector Training Provider’ and ‘Best Private Sector Training Provider for Uva Province’.

Organized by the Skills Development and Vocational Training Division, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced persons, Co-operative Development and Vocational and Skills Development, the ceremony was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena as Chief Guest. Other dignitaries included Minister Buddhika Pathirana, Deputy Minister Karunarathna Paranavithana, Secretary of the Ministry K.D.N. Ranjith Asoka and Additional Secretary, Anuradha Ileaperuma.

The SOS Monaragala Vocational Training Centre is part of SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka which is a non-governmental charitable organization engaged in delivering vocational training programmes to over 1,500 under-privileged members of the youth who lack the means of pursuing a career path due to poverty. The students mainly compromise of youth from poor families and from the SOS Children’s Villages nationwide.

The enrolled trainees are provided with the opportunity to choose from six courses that are NVQ Level 3 certified. In addition, these courses are offered free of charge and cover a variety of different specialties such as welding, automobile mechanical engineering, wood craftsmanship, electrical engineering, information technology and pastry arts. Furthermore, the students are also entitled to meals, accommodation, clothing, uniform, insurance cover, and are even allocated a transportation allowance.

Commenting on this achievement, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages, Sri Lanka, Divakar Rathnadurai said, “I feel proud and happy about our SOS Vocational Training Centre in Monaragala for securing two awards at the ‘World Youth Skills Day’ held at BMICH July this year. These achievements indicate the quality service we provide to upgrade skills of young people to find employment. The two awards are a sign of appreciation for the work SOS Children’s Villages has done for children and youth in our country. This salutation is a motivation for me and my team to continue our services with dedication.”

SOS Children’s Villages has shown it maintains a benchmark of excellence in terms of contributing towards community development through their villages, community development projects and vocational training centres throughout Sri Lanka.
