Teacher strike suspended

The proposed five-day government school teachers’ strike scheduled from October 7, has been suspended by the teachers’ and principals’ trade unions.

Twenty teacher and principals’ trade unions had planned a strike to be conducted from next Monday demanding action on six issues of salary anomalies and a salary hike.

Issuing a joint statement yesterday, the union alliance said that in addition to the salary issues, they were also asking that teachers be freed from clerical work, including filling forms and data collection, and also the enlistment of teachers in pirivenas and government approved schools to the government pensions cadre.

A Cabinet Sub-committee appointed by the President to look into the demands of the unions has suggested that the teachers’ service be made a closed service and that salary anomalies should be rectified accordingly.

Government Teachers’ Union President Joseph Stalin said that they will not be proceeding with the strike at this point of time.
