‘Hakka Pattas’ wounds siblings

An eight-year-old school girl was warded at Galle Hospital, Karapitiya, with injuries sustained in an explosion of a ‘Hakka Pattas”, an improvised explosive used to kill forest animals mainly elephants, Wanduramba Police said yesterday.

The injured girl is from Wanduramba, Galle. Her brother was also injured in the same accident and had left hospital after being treated for his injuries, police said.

The two siblings had found a ‘Hakka Pattas’ and, mistaking it for a ball, they had attempted to play with it when it suddenly exploded injuring them.

On receiving information of the incident, the police inspected the house of a person who is allegedly known to make ‘Hakka Pattas’ and found another ‘Hakka Pattas’ at his house.The suspect was produced before the Baddegama Magistrate.
