‘Government has safeguarded elders’ rights’

The government has contributed greatly to the country’s elders; it understands the importance protecting the rights of the elderly, Polgolla Sastra Ravinda Pirivena Principal Ven. Dunukedeniye Kusaladhamma Thera said.

He was speaking at a special ceremony held at the pirivena to commemorate the International Day for Elders on Monday.

The thera said that the elderly population in the country was on the rise.

He added that a recent report released by the National Secretariat for Elders states that there are 573 persons in our country who are over 100 years old.

“These elders are paid a monthly allowance of Rs.5,000 each by the government,” Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera said.

“There are 306 elders’ homes around the country and 16 percent of the country’s population is composed of the elderly. Supplying food and other necessities to these numbers is a difficult task,” he added.
