Farmers rake in higher income

Rising banana prices have helped farmers in the Walawe basin to rake in a high income during this season.

The wholesale price of sour plantains, which stood at Rs.15 per kilogram, has shot up to R.60. The price of kolikuttu bananas, which was Rs.70 per kilogram, has increased to Rs.130.

Prices of other varieties, such as ‘sugar’ and ‘ash’ plantains, have also registered a higher price than before.

The Walawe basin is one of the largest banana farming areas in the country.
