A businessman stabbed by a gang three weeks ago at the Uppamadu Junction, Kopai, Jaffna died yesterday morning.

The victim, Kandaiyah Kethiswaran (47), died at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Kethiswaran, a leading businessman in the area, hardware shop owner, was hacked to death with a sword on September 6 when he refused a ransom demanded by the gang. He was reportedly hacked to death by two suspects who arrived on a motorcycle.

Businessmen in the area provided the Kopai Police with CCTV footages that show the suspects fleeing after the crime.

Police, however, could not arrest the suspects so far. Several gangs with swords loom over Jaffna, but this is the first time a businessman was killed. Police seek public assistance to identify the suspects.

Kopai Police are investigating.
